An Autumn Craft: Clay Leaf Bowls
As the colder months set in, I always try to involve the kids in getting the house ready for the Autumn and Halloween, and as it’s been a particularly busy and challenging few months, we decided to keep things very simple this year. As part of our Autumn prep we made these beautiful clay leaf bowls, so easy, but so effective, that I thought I’d share the DIY.
To make the bowls, all you’ll need is the following:
Air-dry clay (we used DAS)
A medium-sized leaf
Baking paper or parchment
Rolling pin
Scalpel
Small Bowl
To start, roll out a piece of clay directly onto the parchment to about 4/5mm thick (make sure your leaf fits the parchment before rolling)
Next, place the leaf, face up, onto the rolled out clay and roll the leaf into the clay with just enough pressure to leave an imprint.
Using a scalpel or sharp, pointed knife, carefully cut around the edges of the leaf with as much, or as little, detail as you’d like, and peel away the excess clay.
With the parchment still attached, carefully drop and curve the clay into the bowl, then gently peel off the leaf. leave to dry overnight, then turn over and remove the parchment, leave overnight again to dry.
We left ours unglazed, but you could glaze or paint for a different finish
